South Landing Park and Recreation Area

Tree Planting Day - Fall 2018

Here are a few photos of the new trees being planted

Many thanks to all those who donated their funds and their time to plant the new trees on our October 2018 community work day. We truly appreciate all the work and financial support that were so freely given.

About South Landing Park

The South Landing park will replace the former tennis courts which were removed in late 2017. The courts were at the end of their useful life and would have been very expensive to reconstruct.

Many thoughts for repurposing the area were gathered from the community. In consideration of that community input we looked for a solution that would meet the following goals:

  • Enjoyable by largest number of residents
  • Expand our community social hub
  • Enhance community appearance
  • Low maintenance
  • Support property values
  • Attract prospective buyers
  • Improve first impression of South Landing

Future maintenance and cost considerations also weighed heavily in the decision. As a result, we opted for a park-like recreation area featuring shade trees, shrubs, a gazebo and a bocce ball court.

We approached Sandhills Community College for guidance and were fortunate to be selected as a senior project assigned to a graduating landscape student, David Curry. David created a professional, artistic conceptual plan featuring winding pathways to add interest. He carefully selected a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs that are drought tolerant, deer resistant and would provide shade and color throughout all seasons.

In 2018 the concrete slab was poured as a base for the planned gazebo. Construction of the bocce ball court began in the Fall of 2018 as well as the first plantings of shade trees and dredging of pathways. In the spring of 2019 we hope to continue with the planting of shrubbery and possibly seasonal flower beds. We expect that this site will provide a beautiful area for residents to congregate, and enjoy a leisurely game of bocce.

We are grateful for the generosity and support of many of our residents who donated the bocce court, trees, money and much of their time and effort to help make this vision a reality. We hope that generosity and commitment to South Landing will continue and provide the additional funds and hard work for the gazebo and the remainder of the project.

We can’t wait to announce the grand opening date.
